decon_orb
⌊ Digital music composition.
decon_orb is the first full piece created using my own Real-Time Granular Synthesizer software. It is made up of two movements: an Introductory Movement and a Main Movement. Each movement is derived from separate improvisations, in which I make use of contrasting sonic (and semantic) materials as my basic elements. In the Introductory Movement, the text “cold hearted orb, that rules the night” is repeated twenty-three times (corresponding to the number of repetitions of the words “number nine” in the Beatles’ Revolution 9). Upon each repetition the audio is modified through granulation, until the text becomes incomprehensible. In the Main Movement, two textures (one generated electronically using CSound and the other a recording of natural harmonics on a violin) are convoluted on a granular level. All granular parameters were modified in real time using a MIDI mixer, an infrared sensor, and the computer mouse. Each movement is constructed in an arch form, beginning with the source material in its original state, which is deconstructed until it becomes a completely new sound, and then returning to the source material in a slightly modified state.
