heretheycometheretheygo...
⌊ Composition for string duo. Commissioned by groundswell.

I have been influenced to a great extent by the recent works of John Zorn, John Oswald, and the androgynous figure known only as "antiorp". I had been searching for some way of musically syncretizing various aspects of North American and European culture. The result had to be seen as a direct consequence of their multifaceted nature, but at the same time be a criticism of it. In heretheycometheretheygo... quotation, parody and stylistic allusion are used as tools to create what can be called "graffiti aesthetic" – a collage of unrelated images placed in sharp juxtaposition to each other and which sometimes overlap onto each other. In essence, the work attempts to speak many languages, but is never able to communicate coherent thoughts or ideas. In this way the work can also be seen as a commentary on itself and on the genre in which it exists.
