Island Universe
⌊ Composition for jazz orchestra.
This piece was written for the 1995-96 University of Manitoba Jazz Orchestra under the direction of Richard Gillis, and was written in such a way as to exploit the talents of this specific group of players. My goal was to stay within the bounds of the jazz idiom while bringing elements into the piece which were new to the ensemble. The work explores the combination of the latin big band feel with the influence of modern art rock, using shifting lydian modalities and unusual time signatures.
