Patterns of the Landscape
⌊ Composition for string quartet.

Patterns of the Landscape grew from my experiences travelling back and forth across Western Canada between 1993 and 1994. On one such trip we drove directly from Winnipeg to Castlegar without stopping, and I was able to watch prairies disappear into mountains, rivers empty into lakes, and cities stand next to small towns. I was amazed at the amount of contrast there is in the Canadian landscape, and it is this sense of contrast which I wanted to reflect in this composition. The movements themselves are each very different in sound and form, yet there is thematic material found throughout the piece which acts to unify them in a very subtle manner.
